No. 12 Seed Carolina Competes At NCAA Stanford Regional
May 4, 2016 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina women's golf team will compete in the NCAA Stanford Regional starting Thursday. The Tar Heels will compete against several teams that they've faced before in the regular season and are the No. 12 seed heading in.
It marks the seventh time that Head Coach Jan Mann has led the Tar Heels to the NCAA Regional. It's the 23rd time that the program has reached the NCAA Regional. Last year North Carolina finished 14th at the NCAA South Bend Regional.
The NCAA Stanford Regional will be held Thursday, May 5-Saturday, May 7 at the Stanford University Golf Course which features a par 71, 6,269-yard layout. The course was designed by George C. Thomas and William Bell.
Eighteen teams and six individuals will participate in each of four regional tournaments to determine the championship field. The top six teams and three individuals who are not members of the qualifying schools advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
North Carolina has faced all of the following teams at least once during the regular season: USC, Arkansas, Virginia, UNLV, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Michigan State, and Pepperdine. North Carolina has also faced 36 of the 71 teams remaining in the NCAA field at least once this year.
As a team, Carolina averages 300 strokes per round. The team averages a 12.5-over par round. Individually, Leslie Cloots leads the team with a 74.23 stroke average. Lexi Harkins averages 75.41 while Kelly Whaley averages 75.67. Senior Elizabeth Mallett has averaged 76.56 for the season and Bryana Nguyen has averaged 77.67.
Kelly Whaley is the only member of the starting five who has yet to compete in an NCAA Regional. Leslie Cloots, Lexi Harkins and Bryana Nguyen competed in Carolina NCAA Regional tournament last year. Harkins was 10-over par for the tournament, Nguyen was 11-over and Cloots was 18-over. In Carolina's 2014 NCAA Regional Cloots was 17-over and Mallett was 18-over. Mallett was 7-over in the 2013 NCAA Regional Carolina competed in.
The last time the Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Championships was in 2012 when the team finished seventh at the NCAA West Regional in a slightly different format. Catherine O'Donnell captured the individual championship at the regional with a 5-under-par performance.
