Carolina Falls In Extra Time To ETSU
September 14, 2016 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (4-1) pressured the ETSU (3-2) back line for most of the evening, coming up with 16 total shots, but could not find the back of the net in dropping its first match of the season.
Warren Marshall got the call to start the second half, and early in the stanza he rang a shot off the post in the 53rd minute. He later had another good look at goal but keeper Jonny Sutherland was in place for one of his three saves.
The ball fell to the foot of freshman Maurico Pineda in the 89th minute but his blast from 15 yards went over the cross bar, resulting in the first overtime match of the season for both clubs.
In the opening 45 minutes, Tucker Hume nearly scored another one of his patent last minute goals before the half, but Sutherland got a glove on the ball before it crossed the goal line.
As a result of the save, the Tar Heels went into halftime tied 0-0 for the second time in as many games.
James Pyle made two saves between the pipers for the Tar Heels.
Carolina hosts Pitt on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
