The top-ranked UNC field hockey team closed the first half with a goal and then added another midway through the second half to earn a 2-1 win Friday afternoon at No. 15 Princeton. The Tar Heels improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 0-1.

Both of Carolina's goals came on penalty corners. The first, which UNC took after time ran out on the first-half clock, came from junior Gab Major on a give-and-go assist from sophomore Ashley Hoffman. The second came on a deflection by Megan DuVernois. After the initial Tar Heel shot went off a defender, DuVernois grabbed the loose ball to score her first career goal and put the Tar Heels up 2-0 in the 51st minute.

Princeton's Ryan McCarthy scored on a breakaway with 1:37 on the clock to pull her team within a goal. The Tigers were awarded a penalty corner as time ran out, but Carolina goalkeeper Alex Halpin made the save to preserve UNC's win.

The Tar Heels finished with 16 shots to Princeton's five and 10 corners to PU's four.

“We're delighted to escape Princeton with a win,” UNC coach Karen Shelton. “We feel like we left a few goals out there, but credit to Princeton for keeping it close. We're thrilled to head on to Philadelphia and look forward to playing Penn on Sunday.”

UNC will travel on to Philadelphia Friday night and play another Ivy League opponent there on Sunday. Game time at Penn is 11:30 a.m.
