Carolina Caps Fall Racing At Head Of The Hooch
November 5, 2017 | Women's Rowing
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – North Carolina raced 13 boats Saturday at the Head of the Hooch regatta, wrapping fall racing with a busy afternoon on the Tennessee River. Racing in one of the world's largest regattas, the Tar Heels' top finishes were fifth in the Women's Championship 8+, third in Women's Novice 8+, and 10th in the Women's Championship 4+.
"It was a very solid day for Carolina Rowing," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We had really good races in all events and all boats."
In the Women's Championship 8+ field of 21, UNC's A boat took fifth in 16:37.93. The Tar Heels' B boat was 11th, the C boat was 19th and the D boat was 21st.
The Tar Heels' first-year rowers took three of the top 11 spots in the Women's Novice 8+ race. The A boat finished in 17:22.31 to take third and the B boat was just behind, in fifth at 17:50.14. The C boat was 11th in the field with a time of 19:30.88
"I thought the freshmen did a great job today,' UNC assistant coach Anthony Brock said. "Our B boat beat a lot of A boats and all the other B boats. And our C boat beat a lot of A, B and C boats. Not only do we have a good amount of top-end speed, but our depth will bring more speed to the varsity squad when we merge next week. It was a good way to finish off the fall racing season and bring that momentum into our winter training season."
In addition to the eights, UNC raced six fours. The top Tar Heel finisher was the B boat, in 18:32.13. The Tar Heel A boat finished in 18:37.15. UNC also took 19th, 21st and 22nd. UNC's F boat, made up of novice rowers, finished 25th.
Saturday's racing was UNC's fourth event of the fall. The Tar Heels kicked off the year on Oct. 14 with a scrimmage against Duke, then raced an eight at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 21. Next up was the Princeton Chase on Oct. 29, then the Head of the Hooch on Saturday.
"I was very proud how we raced the fall season," Haney said. "We learned from every weekend and we were able to apply our changes to the next race. Our progress each week and throughout the season was evident in how we were able to perform each weekend. "
The Tar Heels kick off spring racing on March 10 against Clemson and Duke in Clemson, S.C.
