Cary, N.C. - A late goal by Alan Winn couldn't complete the comeback for No. 3 North Carolina as they fell to No. 21 Notre Dame 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. at WakeMed Soccer Park. UNC falls to 14-3-1 on the season and will now wait until the NCAA Tournament field is announced to determine its next opponent.
The Tar Heels fell behind early in the 6th minute after a header from Blake Townes found the back of the net from just outside the six-yard box. Thomas Ueland and Sean Dedrick combined outside the box before a cross found the head of Townes who calmly slotted it home to give Notre Dame the early lead.
The Tar Heels almost equalized in the 15th minute when a driven cross in to the box found Jelani Pieters open at the penalty spot, but his shot was saved by Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Hubbard.
UNC had the better possession and scoring chances to close out the first half but went in to halftime trailing 1-0 even though they led Notre Dame 7-1 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.
The Heels came storming out after halftime creating chances early and often but couldn't break down the Notre Dame defense before John Gallagher scored for the Fighting Irish in the 75th minute to make it 2-0. Gallagher headed in the goal from point blank range to double the Fighting Irish lead.
Alan Winn got the Tar Heels back in the game with his 10th goal of the season in the 87th minute off an assist by Zach Wright to give the Heels a chance, but they couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 2-1.
