February 25, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The third-ranked University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team saw its seven-game winning streak dating back to last year ended as fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins powered past the Tar Heels 13-5 in front of 3,128 fans at Fetzer Field Saturday afternoon. Gerald Logan had a season high 16 saves for the Blue Jays and John Crawley led the Blue Jays with a four-goal performance.
Johns Hopkins improved to 4-0 with the victory while the Tar Heels fell to 3-1. Carolina had won the last five games in the series and nine of the last 10 between the two teams but the Blue Jays led from start to finish on Saturday afternoon. Next up for the Tar Heels will be a trip to play at top-ranked Denver next Saturday at 11:30 a.m. MST (1:30 p.m. EST). It will be a matchup of the nation's past two national championship teams with Denver having won the 2015 title and Carolina having captured the 2016 crown.
Hopkins jumped out quickly on the Tar Heels and led 2-0 just 4:35 into the game on a pair of tallies by Wilkins Dismuke, the first on a man-up situation. Brian Cannon notched a goal for Carolina with 8:16 left in the opening quarter as he scored off a long rebound of a save by Logan. Shack Stanwick pushed the Johns Hopkins lead back to two goals with 4:40 left in the opening quarter and the only goal of the second quarter was a man-up tally by Crawley just 2:19 before intermission. The Blue Jays led at the half 4-1.
Carolina's William Perry scored an unassisted goal with 1:04 elapsed in the third quarter, cutting UNC's deficit to two goals. Hopkins remained resilient and goals by Tal Bruno and Joel Tinney gave it a 6-2 lead with 7:09 left in the period. Chris Cloutier dodged through two Hopkins defenders to score with 2:55 left in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels some temporary momentum but Forry Smith scored just 28 seconds later for the Blue Jays and then an unassisted goal by Crawley with just three seconds left in the third quarter lifted the Blue Jays to an 8-3 lead.
Stephen Kelly scored for Carolina seven seconds into the fourth quarter but Johns Hopkins ran off five goals in a row to go up 13-4 with 5:44 left in the fourth quarter. That nine-goal deficit was the largest UNC had faced in a game since trailing by 11 goals in an NCAA quarterfinal game against Maryland in 2015. Cloutier scored an unassisted goal, his second of the game, with 2:20 to play in the fourth quarter, making the final tally 13-5.
Crawley led Johns Hopkins with four goals while Joel Tinney and Wilkins Dismuke each scored twice. Kyle Marr and Tinney each had two assists for the Blue Jays. Cloutier led UNC with two goals while Brian Cannon, Stephen Kelly and William Perry each scored once.
