Bronze Medal Highlights Heels' Weekend In Florida

SARASOTA, Fla. – A bronze medal by the Tar Heel third varsity eight highlighted a weekend of racing at the Sunshine State Invitational for the UNC rowing team. Five Carolina boats competed in heats on Friday and finals on Saturday.

“This was a great race for us to compete in at this point in the season,” UNC coach Sarah Haney said. “This race has varying leveled of competition and represents where we have come from and where we need to be. We didn't compete in all events as well as wanted but it was really good for us to see that at this point in the season.

UNC's third varsity eight finished in 7:04.6 in its final, behind Alabama and Kansas State, and ahead of Alabama's B boat, Central Florida and Miami.

The Tar Heel varsity eight placed sixth in its final, finishing in 6:59.9. The second varsity eight also placed sixth in a time of 6:59.4.

Carolina's varsity four was fourth in a time of 7:41.4, just behind UCF's 7:40.1. The second varsity four placed sixth in 7:57.3.

Next up for the Tar Heels is the Knecht Cup April 8-9 in West Windsor Township, N.J. “We are ready to attack this week and have a great race next weekend,” Haney said.
