Tar Heels Take Three Of Four Races At Georgetown
April 29, 2017 | Women's Rowing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The North Carolina rowing team won three of four races Saturday morning against Georgetown in racing on the Potomac River. The Tar Heels came out on top in the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four while the Hoyas won the varsity eight.
“Today was another great racing day for Carolina rowing,” UNC head coach Sarah Haney said. “I was really proud of how the team handled travel this weekend with exams starting on Monday.”
The Tar Heels fielded seven boats, thus providing plenty of rowers and coxswains the opportunity to gain racing experience. UNC had three boats in the second varsity eight race, with the third varsity eight and fourth varsity eight/novice eight also racing against the 2V8s from Carolina and Georgetown.
“It was great to see how close the race was and glad our 2V8 won,” Haney said. “It was awesome to see how close our 3V8 was to Georgetown's 2V8 as well. The 4V8 had a solid race against tough competition, our own 2V8 and 3V8 as well as Georgetown's 2V8.”
The Tar Heels also raced three fours, with the varsity four winning its race by a nine-second margin. “Our V4 dominated the race right off the start and kept a commanding lead throughout,” Haney said.
In the second varsity fours race, UNC boats took the top two spots.
“It was great to see some of these kids train all year and come in today and execute the race plan in their first race,” said Anthony Brock, UNC's novice coach. “It was a really good day of racing for everyone.”
Next up for UNC is the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on May 14 in Clemson, S.C.
