Syracuse Downs Tar Heels, 13-11
April 15, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Emily Hawryshuk scored four goals as the 11th-ranked Syracuse women's lacrosse team beat No. 2 North Carolina, 13-11, on Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. Carolina clawed back from two different four-goal, first-half deficits to tie the game at 7-7 shortly after halftime, but Syracuse went on a 6-1 run to retake control.
Syracuse improved to 12-4 this season and tied UNC atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings at 5-1. Carolina fell to 12-2, 5-1 and saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end. The loss also ended UNC's 18-game win streak against ACC opponents (since the 2015 ACC Tournament final almost two years ago).
Saturday's game was the final regular season home appearance for 11 Tar Heel seniors: Maggie Auslander, Carly Davis, Molly Hendrick, Sydney Holman, Katie Kinsey, Sophie McCoy, Kayla Miles, Alex Moore, Carly Reed, Sammy Jo Tracy and Caylee Waters. The seniors were recognized on the field with their families prior to the game.
The contest also was the final regular season women's lacrosse game to be played at Fetzer Field, the Tar Heels' home stadium during most of their 22-year run as a varsity program. The stadium will close after the 2017 season and be replaced by a new facility before the 2018-19 academic year.
Carolina got three second-half goals and three assists from Hendrick and two goals and two assists from Ela Hazar on Saturday. Tracy added two goals, one assist, and her 108 draws this season tie her own single-season UNC record set last year. Reed, Holman, Marie McCool and Kara Klages each scored once.
"Syracuse played with more energy than we did today," head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "We kept turning the ball over at inopportune times and really hurt ourselves. Syracuse played great today, and we made it worse with turnovers and uncharacteristic mistakes."
In addition to Hawryschuk's four goals, Devon Parker, Natalie Wallon and Neena Merola each scored twice for the Orange. Riley Donahue, Mary Rahal and Alie Jimerson all had one goal and one assist, and Cara Quimby had three assists.
Waters had five saves, three ground balls and three caused turnovers in goal for Carolina but fell to 12-2 this season. Asa Goldstock had 12 saves, two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Orange.
Syracuse started the game with a 4-0 run in the first 8:32 of the game, then the Tar Heels got goals from Holman and Hazar to make it 4-2. The Orange replied with back-to-back goals of its own for another four-goal lead at 6-2. Carolina closed the first half on a 3-0 run on goals by Klages, Hazar and Tracy, making it 6-5 at the break.
Back-to-back goals by Hendrick and Tracy tied the score at 7-all with 23:03 to play, but the Orange's 6-1 run over nearly 13 minutes essentially put the game out of reach. The Tar Heels closed the game with a frantic, 3-0 run in the final four minutes.
The team stats were largely even, including shots (30-28 for UNC), ground balls (24-22 for SU), draw controls (14-12 for SU) and turnovers (SU had 20 and UNC had 20).
Carolina will return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Duke. The ACC Tournament will follow April 27-30 in Richmond, Va.
