ATLANTA, Ga. – North Carolina dropped the doubles point but rallied for a 4-3 men's tennis win Friday over No. 20 Georgia Tech at Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The 12th-ranked Tar Heels improved to 22-3 on the season with just a single regular-season match remaining, on Sunday at Louisville.
Trailing 1-0, the Tar Heels got singles wins from William Blumberg at No. 2, Jack Murray at No. 4, Blaine Boyden at No. 5 and Robert Kelly at No. 3 to claim the win and move to 9-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
In doubles, the Yellow Jackets won 6-3 on courts one and two to take a 1-0 lead. As singles got underway, Blumberg was the first to roll to victory, beating No. 105 Carlos Benito 6-3, 6-1. It was the 13th win in a row for the freshman, who is now 11-0 in ACC play with only three of those matches going to a third set.
Murray then won in straight sets at No. 4, beating Daniel Yun 7-5, 6-2 to make it 2-1 Tar Heels.
Next to finish was Boyden, who won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 to bring Carolina within a point of the win.
Kelly provided the clincher on Court 3, beating Carlos Divar 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 for the deciding victory.
Georgia Tech took the final two matches, with Chris Yun beating sophomore Anu Kodali 4-6, 6-1, 3-6 on Court 6. The day's marquee matchup, on Court 1, was the last one decided. Georgia Tech's Christopher Eubanks, ranked No. 7 nationally, eventually edged Tar Heel Ronnie Schneider in a third-set tiebreaker. Schneider, ranked No. 19, fell in the first set but clawed back to win the second in a tiebreaker and force a third.
Carolina now travels on to Louisville, where the Tar Heels face the No. 39 Cardinals on Sunday at noon.
