Nguyen Finishes Runner-Up at Bryan National Collegiate

Browns Summit, N.C. – Junior Bryana Nguyen recorded her first top ten finish of her career following her second straight 69 on Sunday. Nguyen finished the tournament in second place at 7-under par, one shot behind Alabama's Kristen Gillman who broke the tournament record, which was a 7-under par mark set in 2001.

“I am very pleased with how I played today,” Nguyen said. “Probably the best ball striking tournament I have had yet. And the putts fell when they felt like falling, I didn't have to force anything. I am very excited for post season because the team has been playing great and I know we can do even better. Very proud of everyone on the team.”

The team finished the tournament tied for fourth place after a 3-over par round of 291 to bring the team total for the tournament to 8-over par. In addition to Nguyen's 69, Leslie Cloots shot 72 to finish tied for 16^th, Lexi Harkins shot 73 to finish tied for 31^st, Brynn Walker shot 77 to also tie for 31^st, and Kelly Whaley shot 77 to end up tied for 42^nd.

Mariana Ocano and Cheni Xu also played for the Tar Heels as individuals and shot 78s on Sunday. Ocano finished the tournament tied for 69^th and Xu finished 88^th.

Coach Jan Mann was pleased with Carolina's performance this weekend, saying, “It was great to see the team put together three solid rounds this weekend. Overall they showed confidence in their execution and remained focused throughout. Bryana's play was exceptional! Her 7 under-par and second place finish as an individual was impressive! We are looking forward to carrying the momentum forward to the ACC Championships in two weeks.”

Golfstat's number three Alabama won the team competition at 13-under, breaking the previous tournament record by five strokes. They were followed by number nine Georgia (+1), #20 Baylor (+3), and a tie between Carolina and NC State (#29) at 8-over par. Overall, Carolina beat three schools in the top 15 (South Carolina, Miami, Wake Forest).

Coming into this weekend, Nguyen had shot two rounds in the 60s in her career, she has now doubled that total.

Next up for the Tar Heels will be the ACC Championship in Pawleys Island, S.C. The tournament will be played from April 13th to April 15^th.
