ATHENS, Ga. – North Carolina junior Robert Kelly and freshman William Blumberg teamed for their first win in the NCAA doubles bracket and Blumberg continued his march through the singles draw on Thursday at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, which continue through Monday at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In a first round match, Kelly and Blumberg beat LSU's Justin Butsch and Jordan Daigle 7-6(4), 7-5. They'll face Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Round of 16.
Blumberg also advanced to the Round of 16 in singles, thus assuring himself of All-America honors. Facing California's Andre Goransson for the second time in a week (the two played last Thursday when UNC beat the Golden Bears in the team tournament), Blumberg won 7-5, 6-2 to advance. Next he'll meet Florida's Alfredo Perez, the No. 6 seed in the field. That match is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.
