CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina was awarded the No. 2 national seed and will host the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional starting Friday at Boshamer Stadium, the NCAA announced Monday on ESPN2. Carolina will face Davidson Friday at 6 p.m. following a matchup between Florida Gulf Coast and Michigan at 1 p.m.
The ACC Coastal Division champion Tar Heels (47-12) are in the tournament for the 16th time in 19 seasons under head coach Mike Fox and will begin the event as a national seed for the seventh time.
The Chapel Hill Regional champion will advance to face the winner of the Houston Regional in the Super Regional round for the right to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Carolina is making its 30th overall NCAA tournament appearance. The Tar Heels are 60-33 in NCAA play under Fox and have won 50 games in the postseason since 2006.
Carolina is 89-22 all-time against Davidson, including a 7-6 win in 10 innings earlier this month. The Tar Heels are 6-7 against Michigan, with the last meeting a three-game UNC sweep in Chapel Hill in 2010. Carolina has never played FGCU in baseball.
Season ticket holders and Rams Club members have until Wednesday to submit ticket requests. The public on-sale will take place Wednesday.
