June 10, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Defending national champion North Carolina will play host to the University of Michigan in the 2017 ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday November 29, the first time the Tar Heels and Wolverines have played each other since the 1993 NCAA title game in New Orleans.
UNC and Michigan will be playing for only the sixth time when the teams meet at the Smith Center in late November. The Tar Heels are 3-2 against the Wolverines, including a 77-71 win on April 5, 1993, in the Superdome to win UNC''s third and Coach Dean Smith's second NCAA championship.
This will be the first time UNC and Michigan will play each other on either school's campus. All five previous meetings have come at neutral sites including Charlotte (1987 NCAA East Regional second round), Seattle (1988 NCAA West Regional Sweet 16), Lexington, Ky. (1989 Southeast Regional Sweet 16), Honolulu (1992 Rainbow Classic) and New Orleans (1993 NCAA championship game).
Carolina is 9-9 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, including 4-4 at home, 3-5 on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites.
The Tar Heels have played 14 of its previous 18 games in the Challenge against Big Ten teams that were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 (tied with Duke for the most ranked opponents in the history of the Challenge). The Tar Heels have seven wins over ranked teams in the Challenge, second most behind Duke.
Michigan is the eighth different opponent the Tar Heels will have played in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. In the Challenge, UNC has played Michigan State five times, Illinois and Indiana four times each, Ohio State twice, and Iowa, Maryland and Wisconsin one time apiece.
