Four Corners: First Steps Of 2017-18 Season Coming Soon

CHAPEL HILL—It's been more than four months since North Carolina beat Gonzaga to win the 2017 NCAA championship, but for many of the Tar Heel players and coaches the memories are still quite fresh. Now, with the university's fall semester classes set to open on Tuesday, the 2017-18 season will be here soon for the defending champs.
Preseason conditioning is just around the corner, and practice will begin shortly thereafter. As the summer comes to an end, here's some of the latest Tar Heel news you may have missed.
1. NEWS & NOTES
• The Smith Center is closed until August 27 and the Carolina Basketball Museum is closed for renovations until Sept. 4. The museum is getting a full makeover to incorporate commemorations and videos of the 2017 national title and much more.
• Senior point guard Joel Berry II had a chance encounter at a Chapel Hill restaurant recently that gave him some good perspective on the influence Carolina players can have on the world around them. Adam Lucas explains. Berry clearly took it to heart, highlighting it on his Twitter account:
• Redemption, the behind-the-scenes look at Carolina's yearlong journey from 2016 heartbreak to 2017 triumph, is the official book chronicling the Tar Heels' title run. Penned by insiders Lucas, Steve Kirschner and Matt Bowers and including plenty of insider, never-before-seen photos of the unforgettable season, Redemption will be out soon. Preorder the book here.
• Former Tar Heel players Sean May, Antawn Jamison and Wes Miller joined NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly at a pro-am golf tournament in Greensboro.
• The Atlantic 10 has hired Matt Doherty, the former UNC player and head coach, as its Associate Director for Men's Basketball.
2. LAST WEEK
• The NCAA recently released its attendance report for the 2016-17 season, and Carolina ranked among the top five schools in the nation in home attendance for the 30th time in the last 31 years. • Marcus Paige, who recently signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets for 2017-18, got married last weekend. Check out this photo of the wedding from his mother:
• Phil Ford, the most decorated point guard in Carolina history, visited Greensboro last week to assist in a school supply drive by the Greensboro Police Department.
3. 2017-18 SEASON TIDBITS
• The 2017 NCAA champion Tar Heels will receive their national title rings in a unique ceremony involving members of past Carolina national title squads on September 9 at halftime of the football game against Louisville in Kenan Stadium. Adam Lucas has the details.
• Joel Berry II joined the nation's top 10 college and top 20 high school point guards at Chris Paul's CP3 Elite Guard camp last week in Winston-Salem:

• Former Tar Heel point guard Kendall Marshall is participating in the USA Basketball Men's AmeriCup Team training camp this week in Houston, vying for a spot on the national team that will represent the United States at the FIBA AmeriCup 2017. Former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy will coach the team.
