Winn's Double Leads Carolina Past William & Mary
September 13, 2017 | Men's Soccer
CARY, North Carolina - Alan Winn scored twice to lead No. 8 North Carolina to a 3-2 victory over William & Mary on Wednesday night from WakeMed Soccer Park.
North Carolina won its third game in a row, improving to 5-1 on the season, while the Tribe fall to an even 2-2-2.
Winn scored just three minutes, 13 seconds into the first half to get the scoring underway early. The Garland, Texas, native used his blazing speed to dribble past both the Tribe defense and the goal keeper and delicately placed a left-footed shot into an unoccupied net.
William & Mary equalized in the 32nd minute on William Eskay's second goal of the season. A cross from Reeves Trott was flicked past the Tar Heel keeper to knot the score at 1-1.
Carolina made its first and only substitution of the opening half and that decision paid off immediately when Giovanni Montesdeoca, a redshirt freshman from Dallas, Texas, scored 26 seconds after coming on the pitch for his first collegiate goal.
Cam Lindley began the play with a corner kick that was headed by Jelani Pieters at the near post and the ball fell to the foot of Montesdeoca and he punched it in at the goal line for a 2-1 Tar Heel lead in the 41st minute.
For the second time in the match, William & Mary found an equalizer to deadlock the match, this time at 2-2. A long throw in found Eskay and he laid off a ball to Antonio Bustamante and he promptly hit a rocket past a diving UNC keeper Alec Smir in the 69th minute.
The lead was short lived, however, as Winn made it a double in the 73rd minute. Lindley again started the action with a free kick after Bustamante was whistled for a yellow card. The delivery went to Mauricio Pineda inside the box and he found Winn for his second of the evening.
Carolina faces No. 23 Duke on Saturday at Bryan Park in Browns Summit, N.C. Kick off on ACC Network Extra is scheduled for 7 p.m.
