CHAPEL HILL—Following a long holiday break, the University of North Carolina's JV men's basketball team suited up for their first game of the season against the Eagles of Wake Technical Community College. Almost a month had passed since their last practice, leaving a lot of uncertainty about the physical and mental preparedness of each player.
Coach Hubert Davis, the head coach as well as his assistants, Lucas Bouknight and Brett McCraw, expressed their concern in practice Monday, worrying that the team had not stayed in shape during their weeks of vacation. Despite these concerns, the Heels showed up ready to play Tuesday and defeated the Eagles in a home sweep, 90-65. The Heels were led by Junior, Will Breck, who finished the night with 16 points. Other strong contributors were Caleb Ellis (13 pts), Preston Smith (12 pts), Pearce Landry (12 pts) and Robbie O'Han (11 pts). Junior Brooks Palmer was a huge playmaker, totaling 16 rebounds and 7 assists. And while there is always room for improvement, if this was any indicator on the rest of the season, there's a lot of hope for what's to come.
The JV team will take on their next opponent, Guilford College, Thursday, January 11 at 7:30 pm in the Smith Center.
