Media Day Q&A: Seventh Woods, Garrison Brooks
October 11, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL—The North Carolina basketball program held its annual preseason team media day in the Smith Center on Tuesday afternoon. Â
Head coach Roy Williams held a press conference to preview the 2018-19 season, players posed for photos, returning players conducted interviews with members of the press and the team posed for its annual team photo.
Below are highlights of question and answer sessions between the media and Tar Heel junior guard Seventh Woods and sophomore forward Garrison Brooks.
Seventh Woods
#0, Junior, Guard
Â
On being the most experience returning point guard
"The first couple practices have been great. I think the biggest thing for me is finding comfort, being comfortable on the floor and finding confidence. I definitely have the ability to do it but, being comfortable on the court will have a lot to do with it."
Â
On how this year has started
"Definitely way better. Last year, being hurt, I was able to sit back and watch how the game goes a lot. I think that carried a big load for me and helped me a lot. This year, everything is slowing down for me finally and I have a little bit more freedom, I think that goes a long way also."
Â
On the freshmen on this year's team
"They're still adjusting but I think they will be a great addition to this team. Leaky [Rechon Black] is a 6'6" point guard and a lot of people don't have that. I think he will surprise a lot of people. Everybody already expected a lot from Coby [White] and Nas [Nassir Little]. I think this year is probably the deepest team we have had while I've been here."
Â
Garrison Brooks
#15, Sophomore, Forward
Â
On offseason improvements
"First, I think I am growing. All over my game is growing, I'm getting stronger, getting better, just trying to become a better player … Scoring on the block, being stronger and better rebounder is what I think I have improved on most … I believe I am shooting the ball better. I worked on my shot a lot this year."
Â
On the point guard battle
"It could go either way. We've got Sev [Seventh Woods], we've got Coby [White], we've got K.J. [Smith], we got some really good point guards. I didn't even mention Leaky [Black]. He's a 6'7" point guard, that's really tough. It is going to be a hard decision to make for Coach."
Â
On offseason weight gain
"I think [I gained] 15 pounds. It has helped a lot with position scoring and on defense. It has helped a lot [playing through contact]. I struggled finishing under the basket. This year I'll take another step towards being better at that."Â
