Syracuse Outlasts Tar Heels in ACC Tilt
October 19, 2018 | Volleyball
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite a season-high of seven aces, Carolina (5-13, 1-8 ACC) dropped a three set match to Syracuse (11-6, 7-2 ACC) Friday evening at the Women's Building.
Â
Aristea Tontai, Hunter Atherton and Mia Fradenburg each recorded two aces while Skylar Wine tacked on one in the third set to up UNC's season-high to seven team aces. However, it was not enough to limit the Orange who hit .365 in the match for the 3-0 win.
Â
Hadden LaGarde upped her career high from Sunday to eight kills as both Wine and Madison Laufenberg matched the total. However, Syracuse's Polina Shemanova posted 16 alone with four teammates hitting over .556.
Â
UNC earned the first three points off a Laufenberg kill, Tontai ace and Laufenberg-Ava Bell block. However a 9-2 run put the Orange ahead, 12-7. Carolina knotted the frame at 14-14 thanks to Tontai's second ace, but fell behind on a trio of errors to make it 17-14 in favor of the home team. With Atherton at the service line, the Tar Heels went on a five-point run to bring the score to 22-21. Despite battling through one set point, Syracuse took the first set, 25-23, on a kill by Yuliia Yastrub.
Â
The Tar Heels and Orange battled to begin set two with neither team taking more than a two-point lead until the 12-10 mark in favor of SU. Syracuse put together a four-point run that UNC was unable to come back from. Laufenberg and Bell were perfect on the attack with four and two kills, respectively. But with five kills by Shemanova in set two, the Orange took a two set lead with a 25-18 win.
Â
Noth Carolina continued to battle throughout the third set with nine tie scores and five lead changes. After knotting the frame at 9-9, Syracuse went on an 6-1 run to lead 14-10. Casey Jacobs and Greer Moseman guarded the court with impressive defense and six and seven digs respectively to keep UNC alive late in the match. A block by Atherton and Bell followed by a Wine ace brought the score within one, 23-22. However, the home team rallied for the win, 25-22.

The Tar Heels travel to Boston College for a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup against the Eagles.
