Carolina Begins Four-Match Road Trip at Syracuse, Boston College

CHAPEL HILL – After coming up short in two matches at home, North Carolina embarks on a four-match road trip beginning this weekend at Syracuse Friday and Boston College Sunday.

Friday's match at Syracuse is slated for 7 p.m. while Sunday's matinee at Boston College begins at 1 p.m. Fans can watch both matches on the ACC Network Extra.

Despite a pair of losses against No. 6 Pitt and Virginia, freshman Hadden LaGarde shined in Sunday's match, swatting six kills in her career debut. Redshirt-sophomore Hunter Atherton ranks seventh in the ACC with 9.00 assists per set.

About the Tar Heels (5-12, 1-7 ACC)
About the Orange (10-6, 6-2 ACC)
After a split weekend against Florida State and Miami, Syracuse wraps up its four-match home stand with Carolina and State. The Orange hold steady at fourth in the ACC with only two losses to Pittsburgh and Florida State. Current ACC Freshman of the Week, Polina Shemanova leads the league with 4.42 kills per set.
About the Eagles (12-8, 2-6 ACC)
After starting conference play with wins over Clemson and Georgia Tech, Boston College has only won five sets in the following six matches, setting the stage for a battle against Carolina with one league win. Makenzie Morrison ranks fourth in the ACC with 4.14 digs per set.

About the Tar Heels (5-12, 1-7 ACC)
- After earning their first ACC win at home over NC State, The Tar Heels have struggled to pick up a second. UNC managed to take a set from both Miami and Florida State, but fell in straight sets to Pitt and Virginia.
- Head coach Joe Sagula is one win away from 800 career wins and four away from 600 with the Tar Heels.
- Destiny Cox leads UNC with 201 kills, followed by Ava Bell (129) and Skylar Wine (127). Katharine Esterley paces the Tar Heels' block with 55. Hunter Atherton runs the offense, averaging 9.00 assists per set. With back-to-back 22 dig matches in the Sunshine State, Mia Fradenburg owns team-best 227 digs.
- Each of UNC's preseason losses were against either ranked teams or teams receiving votes in the AVCA poll.

- After losing a trio of matches against three ranked opponents at the Marquette Tournament, Syracuse is 8-3 since that point with two conference losses to then-ranked No. 8 Pitt and Florida State.
- Leads the ACC in blocks with 2.90 B/S as both Amber Witherspoon (1.38 B/S) and Santita Ebangwese (1.29 B/S) rank top-10 in conference
- Reigning ACC Freshman of the Week Polina Shemanova tallied 55 total kills and 28 digs against UM/FSU.
- Finished 2017 with a 22-14 overall record and went 2-1 in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, topping Albany and Towson before falling to West Virginia.
- UNC leads the series, 8-1 with the lone Syracuse win in 1990. Carolina has swept all but one win. No matches between UNC and SU have gone a full five sets. Pitt leads the all-time series, 10-6. However, Carolina is 3-1 at home against Pitt while the two teams are split 3-3 in conference meetings.

- Head coach Jason Kennedy is in his first year at the helm of the Eagles. Kennedy spend the past three seasons as associate head coach at USC, helping the Trojans to a 75-25 record.
- The Tar Heels are undefeated against Boston College, 22-0, including a perfect 11-0 away record.
