CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Carolina out-blocked Boston College on Sunday afternoon, but the Eagles withstood the test to earn the three-set win at the Power Gym in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Carolina's best chance came in the first set as the Tar Heels hit .342 in the frame, but unfortunately, they were unable to close out for the win, falling 25-27. UNC (5-14, 1-9 ACC) continued to battle throughout the match, stuffing Boston College six blocks to five, but the Eagles (13-9, 3-7 ACC) hit .356 in the contest for the sweep.
Skylar Wine led UNC's attack with 11 kills while both Ava Bell and Destiny Cox posted eight each. Aristea Tontai hit seven with one block. Bell tallied four total blocks, including a solo bock in the first set. Mia Fradenburg grounded Carolina's back row with 10 digs while Hunter Atherton logged nine.
Boston College balanced its attack between Clare Naughton and Jewel Strawberry who both tallied double-digit kills. Naughton also posted the match's only double-double with 10 digs en route to the Eagles' first win against UNC in program history that also snapped a seven-match losing streak.
The Heels started strong with a pair of kills by Wine to begin the match. Bell posted a solo block to give UNC a 3-2 lead. Carolina's early lead was quickly taken away on a six-point run by the Eagles. Solid defense from UNC's back row and a trio of blocks tied the set back up at 17-17. A kill by Cox gave UNC a 22-21 lead. UNC and BC knotted the match at 22, 23, 24 and 25. However, a Boston College block and Jewel Strawberry's seven kill earned the Eagles a 27-25 win. The Tar Heels hit .342 in the set as Wine slugged nine kills.
Boston College went on a four-point run to lead 9-5 that it would never give up. A slew of UNC miscues allowed the Eagles to take a 17-9 as the Tar Heels used their second timeout. Bell shined despite the set loss with three kills without an error. However, BC's Clare Naughton slugged six of the Eagles' 16 in the frame good for a .429 team hitting percentage.
In set three, Tontai slugged her sixth kill coming out of the timeout. Bell pounded three in the frame in addition to six from Cox to bring UNC within two. However, the Eagles went on an 8-2 run that Carolina could not come back from. The Tar Heels battled through one match point, but could not come up with the win. Boston College hit .306 in the final set en route to the 25-19 win.
