All-American redshirt senior Chip Ness returns for his final season as a Tar Heel at 184 pounds, and he will look to lead the way and improve upon his seventh-place finish at NCAAs last year. Ness figures to be the starter at this weight throughout the season, but will compete with redshirt freshmen Chasen Blair and Hunter Queen.
Â
"Chip can compete with the best," head coach Coleman Scott said. "He had a rocky start last season and was unseeded at NCAAs because of it, but he beat top guys. He's excited to improve upon that and we're ready to see him compete this year."

Â
With the graduation of NCAA qualifier Danny Chaid, Carolina will have a new face at 197 pounds for the 2018-19 season. His brother, freshman Mark Chaid, will be in the mix as well as freshman Brandon Whitman and redshirt freshman Nick Mosco.
Â
"This is a true open weight and we're looking for someone to come in and really take control of this spot," Scott said. "Whoever it ends up being, they are going to be prepared to win right away."
Â

Â
After going 23-9 and finishing third at the ACC Championships last season, redshirt senior Cory Daniel comes into the year poised to lead the Tar Heels at the heavyweight position. With 50 career wins, he enters the season in wins behind just Ness (54). Daniel will compete face stiff competition in the room from redshirt sophomore Andrew Gunning, who went 16-9 last season. Freshman Keaton Kluever will also be in the mix.
Â
"Cory has had the best preseason of his career, and Gunning has been pushing him and making him better." Scott said. "This is his last year and it's time for him to be an All-American. This is a year he can come out and do just that."
