Carolina Concludes Road Trip with Setback at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Despite out-hitting Clemson in the first two frames, North Carolina fell to the Tigers in straight sets Sunday afternoon at the Jervey Gym. The Tar Heels (5-16, 1-11 ACC) pushed Clemson (13-12, 4-8 ACC) to 26 and 29 points in sets one and two, respectively, but it was not enough as the Tigers earned the 3-0 decision.

The Tar Heels battled through 30 tied scores and eight lead changes, but Clemson came out on top. UNC out-dug Clemson, 39-35, led by Mia Fradenburg and Skylar Wine who tallied 11 and 12 digs, respectively. The Tigers' Emily Curtis posted a match-best 15 digs. UNC balanced its attack between Wine and Destiny Cox who each tallied 11 kills. Hunter Atherton assisted 32 of Carolina's 42 kills, tallying seven kills of her own. Clemson's Brooke Bailey slugged a match-high 15 kills.

A block by Katharine Esterley and Madison Laufenberg earned UNC the first point of the match. Wine's third kill broke up a five-point Clemson run at the 10-12 mark. Ava Bell took advantage of the over-pass to make it 20-21 late in the first set. The Tar Heels tied it up at 21, 22 and 23 before using their second timeout at Clemson's first set point. Carolina knotted the frame at 24 but Clemson finished it off with a kill by Bailey for a 26-24 first set decision. Despite the setback, Carolina outhit Clemson, .324 to .316 thanks to 18 UNC kills.

Back-to-back blocks by Wine and Aristea Tontai put UNC ahead, 6-4 early in the second set. Bell and Atherton formed UNC's fourth block of the match to extend the run to four as Clemson called a timeout. Tough serving from Greer Moseman earned UNC a 18-13 lead on a five-point run. The Tigers responded with two rallies late in the second set to tie it up four times after trailing 16-22. A kill from Raleigh Clark gave UNC is second set point before Atherton earned the third, but Tigers finished off with another rally for the 29-27 decision. Mirroring the first set, the Tar Heels outhit Clemson again with 16 kills, led by five from Cox.

Clemson jumped to an early 7-3 lead in the third set but UNC responded with a four-point run that included a kill from Clark and a Casey Jacobs ace to knot the frame at 14-14. The Tar Heels battled to take a 20-18 lead but Clemson reclaimed the lead with a seven-point rally to win the match, 25-20.

After four matches on the road, the Tar Heels return home to Carmichael Arena on Nov. 2 vs. Duke and Nov. 4 vs. Wake Forest.
