North Carolina’s Strong Start Not Enough at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Tar Heels dominated the first set at Florida State for a 25-21 win, but were unable to keep their momentum going as the Seminoles came from behind to take the match, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Tully Gym.
North Carolina (5-10, 1-5 ACC) attacked at a .412 clip in the first set, but hit .159 overall. Despite dropping the first set, Florida State (9-7, 5-1 ACC) attacked a .336 rate with only 12 errors scattered through the four sets.
Mia Fradenburg recorded 22 digs to match her season high set at Miami. Hunter Atherton set 45 of UNC's 50 kills against Florida State. The Tar Heels balanced their attack among Skylar Wine, Ava Bell and Destiny Cox who each logged double-digit kills.
Florida State's Payton Caffrey hit a match-high 16 kills while Taryn Knuth tacked on 10. The Seminoles' limited errors were the difference maker en route to the four-set win.
The Tar Heels set the tone from the start of set one. Greer Moseman's ace gave UNC a 5-1 lead early in set one as Florida State called a timeout. The Tar Heels jumped to an 11-4 lead thanks to clean hitting and a two Carolina aces. However, the Seminoles responded with a 5-1 run and eventually brought the set within three points, 15-12. Wine's third kill broke up FSU's 4-0 run and gave the Tar Heels a 21-18 lead. Cox secured the 25-21 set one victory with her fifth kill. UNC hit a blistering .412 in the set with a mere two attack errors. Florida State's Payton Caffery matched Cox's five kills while the team hit .379 in the stanza.
The Tar Heels and Seminoles battled in set two with neither squad taking more than a two-point lead until the media timeout. Katharine Esterley and Cox connect for the first block of the match. North Carolina trailed by two at the media timeout, 15-13, but Bell's sixth kill of the day knotted the frame at 15-15. However, the Seminoles went on a 6-0 run to lead 21-15 with a pair of service aces. Florida State closed out the set on a 10-2 run for the 25-17 set win, evening up the match 1-1 overall.
Florida State's momentum continued in the third set as the Seminoles went on a 7-1 run for a 14-6 lead and eventually the set, 25-14. Raleigh Clark came off the bench putting a pair of kills on the floor. The Tar Heels hindered themselves in set three with nine attack errors after only seven in the first two sets combined.
Mirroring the third frame, the Seminoles went on a 6-0 run early and maintained their lead for the 25-15 win and the 3-1 decision. Clark made her presence known in the fourth set with a kill and block for back-to-back UNC points. The Tar Heels battled late with a pair of kills from Bell, but it was not enough against the home team.
The Tar Heels return home to face Pittsburgh at the Dean Smith Center on Friday evening and Virginia at Carmichael Arena Sunday afternoon.
