Stanford completes the second leg of the Jarod Haase North Carolina Reunion Tour when the Cardinal visits Chapel Hill Monday night. Haase, who is in his third season at Stanford after four years at UAB, beat his former colleague and Kansas teammate C.B. McGrath and UNCW 72-59 Friday night in Wilmington.
The 2018-19 campaign figures to be a transitional one for Haase and the Cardinal, which starts four underclassmen after losing the program's top three players in the offseason. Seniors Michael Humphrey and Dorian Pickens exhausted their eligibility, while junior star Reid Travis is now at Kentucky as a graduate transfer. With that trio in the fold, Stanford finished 19-16 a season ago and tied for third in the Pac-12.
Despite the losses, Haase's club has a number of promising youngsters who got valuable playing time a year ago. Sophomore K.Z. Okpala started 21 games as a freshman and is leading the Cardinal in scoring through two games with 29 in the opener against Seattle and 23 at UNCW. The 6-9 sophomore has a smooth inside-outside game and through two games is showing more of a knack for rebounding than he did as a freshman.
Point guard Daejon Davis started every game last season and broke the school record for assists by a freshman. While he was a past-first option (top 100 nationally in assist rate), Davis was effective when he did look to shoot, making 40 percent of his 3s on the year. Freshman Cormac Ryan joins Davis in the starting backcourt, and the New York native has scored in double figures twice to start his Stanford career.
Veteran 7-footer Josh Sharma is the lone senior on the roster, and 6-9 sophomore Oscar da Silva rounds out the starting five. Through two games, da Silva is Stanford's leading rebounder at 8.5 boards per contest.
While the Cardinal was picked ninth in the Pac-12 in the league's preseason poll, the conference figures to be pretty even again in 2019. Currently nine Pac-12 teams rank between 42 and 92 in the KenPom adjusted efficiency margin ratings, with only Oregon (18), Cal (171) and Washington State (173) outside the peloton. Haase showed consistent growth in his four years at UAB, taking the Blazers from 16 wins in 2013 to 26 in 2016. His time at Stanford has seen a similar path, and an increase from last year's 19 wins would likely see his team in the mix come Selection Sunday.
