Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Roy Williams
Â
Opening Statement
"You guys are going to have ask questions. It was very frustrating to me. That was not the game we wanted to play, not the way we want to guard people. They shot 15 free throws in the second half. You guys better come up with some pretty good questions."
Â
On Kenny Williams' scoring
"Well I told him yesterday. I stopped because Andrew got lost and Kenny helped him. Brandon got lost Kenny helped him. Then the guy drove the basket and Kenny crossed the lane. I said, 'Guys, I am going to play him forever.' Yes, I would like him to make a jump shot before I die, that's what I told him, and he did. I am appreciative of that. But no, I wasn't really worried about his shot. If you look at his stat sheet it's not bad, 4/6 from the field, 2/2 from the foul line, 4 assists, 1 turnover."
Â
On second half performance:
"It was frustrating in the second half, we didn't guard them. They switched every screen and we acted like we had never seen that before in our lives. The best thing that ever happened to my team is that we do not have practice tomorrow. …Â
Â
On what went wrong in the second half
Having a brain. Attention to detail. Effort sometimes, because we didn't push the ball very hard. Getting up the court, getting back on defense. So, it was a lot of negative stuff out there.""
Â
On UNC's defensive performance
"How many Division I teams are there? It used to be 351. Brad Frederick told me that there were more than that now. We are close to 351. I mean if you think about, Elon the other night did miss a bunch of shots. They had some wide open shots too. I am not very happy right now, but I thought in that Wofford game we were really attentive on the defensive end. We had some enthusiasm on the defensive end and today was like the matador. Just run out there and let them drive right by you. It was very frustrating and yet I finally just said in the locker room 'I'm going to shut up and not say more until I see the tape.' Then I might say a lot more, maybe I am wrong. Who knows?"Â
Â
On first half defensive performance
"I didn't like what we did in the first half either. Go back and look guys, they missed a lot of shots. We missed a ton from two feet ourselves. That's concentration. You gotta be able to compete every single day, but no, I am not happy at all. The good news is I am not going to stay awake all night. I will stay awake most of the night, but not all night. We gotta get better defensively. You can't give someone 15 free throws in the second half, and the second thing is too, points off of offensive rebounds. We gotta do better there too. Thank goodness it's a long season. I would be a terrible football coach if we had to wait a week before we played again."
Â
On if he liked anything
"Kenny's shot went in, so you, know that'll… I really don't think he worried about it either, but probably make him feel a little bit better. I liked the way the crowd reacted when he took it to the basket the first time and made the layup and then made the three and then the three he made in the second half, that was the old Kenny because he just knew he was going to knock it in. So, I like that part of it. But, if we want to be really good like we say, we got to have a lot more pride defensively. We didn't have very much pride defensively. I mean, what did they shoot…  35 in the first half, 44 in the second half and they missed their last three of their last four shots, or four of their last five shots."
Â
On Cam Johnson rebounding well through first three games
"Well, he's got to do that. I mean, we don't have Brice Johnson. That was just a natural rebounder. Kennedy Meeks, that's just a natural rebounder. Isaiah Hicks, who was just a natural rebounder, much less John [Henson] or Tyler [Hansbrough], those kind of guys, so we got to get more rebounding, more help on the boards from our 2, 3 men. But we got to get to the offensive boards too. And I think… I don't have the first half. I think we had eight rebounds at halftime, we had 13, so we had five in the whole second half. Again, if we really want to be good, we've got to … take more attention to detail. I don't think they loaf, but they weren't ten on a scale of one to ten. It was more pedestrian."
Â
On Leaky Black's versatility as a newcomer
"It was not quite valid, but against Elon he played the five. He's the only player I've ever coached that in a game, in his first three games he's played one, two, three, four and five. I've never had a player like that, so that's very positive. It wasn't game time, lock down you've got to stop them to get a win. He's tremendously intelligent, has innate ability, instinctive ability to make the right plays. He's going to be a really, really good basketball player. Some guys right now have got to step ahead and say, "I'm ahead," instead of everybody acting like they're all the same. He's really good."
