White Named ACC Rookie Of The Week
November 26, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL–Coby White of North Carolina is the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Virginia sophomore De'Andre Hunter was named the ACC Player of the Week. ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and are announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
White averaged 22.7 points while shooting .513 from the floor – and .560 from 3-point range – in a 2-1 week for the Tar Heels. The Goldsboro, N.C., native scored 16 points in win over Saint Francis, had 33 points in a loss to Texas and 19 points and a season-high eight assists in a win over No. 17 UCLA.
White's 33 points versus Texas are the third-most ever by a Tar Heel freshman and the most since 2011. The 6-foot-5 guard connected on seven 3-pointers against the Longhorns, the second most by a UNC freshman. His 19 points against UCLA were also a team high.
The Cavaliers' Hunter was named the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists as No. 4 Virginia (6-0) captured the title. The Philadelphia native tallied 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Virginia past No. 25 Wisconsin 53-46 in the championship game. That performance came after he matched a career high with 23 points and added six rebounds in the Cavaliers' 66-59 win over Dayton in the semifinals.
Hunter flirted with a triple-double with 15 points, eight rebounds and career-high nine assists in UVA's 74-52 win over Middle Tennessee in the quarterfinals. He shot .618 percent from the floor (21-of-34) and 81.3 percent from the free throw line (13-of 16).
