UNC Takes Down Virginia Tech 3-0 in ACC Quarterfinals
November 4, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – The No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels took down No. 22 Virginia Tech 3-0 on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament to advance to Wednesday's semifinal match against Duke at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary at 7 p.m. ET. Goals from Jeremy Kelly, Mauricio Pineda and Jack Skahan led the Heels offensively while the defense pitched their fourth consecutive shutout.
After the first 12 minutes of the game saw little action, Jeremy Kelly got things going in the 13th minute. After a cross from Skahan was cleared, Kelly corralled the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot to the bottom right corner past the keeper for the goal, his first of the season.
Carolina doubled its lead in the 37th minute to make it 2-0. After VT applied some pressure, the Tar Heels were able to get out on the counter attack. Skahan slid a cross all the way across the box to Jelani Pieters who played it back to the middle for Mauricio Pineda. Pineda needed just one touch to go underneath the keeper for his fifth goal of the season and put the Tar Heels on top 2-0.
The Tar Heels opened the second half with multiple scoring chances. A Pieters shot was stopped by a diving save, Pieters passed up another chance for what looked a great pass that was ultimately broken up at the last second, and a Skahan shot was also stopped by the keeper.
Skahan continued his hot streak in the 74th minute, taking a through ball from Milo Garvanian and going near-post upper-90 to extend the lead to 3-0. Skahan has now recorded six goals and two assists in the last four games.
Carolina outshot VT 13-7, with shots on goal totaling 7-3, for their 10th shutout of the season.
This game marks North Carolina's fourth consecutive shutout, and the second time this season they have logged four or more straight shutouts.
