2017-18 Record: 21-13
Carolina Series History (Last Meeting): Carolina leads 3-1 (Wofford 79, Carolina 75, Dec. 20, 2017, Chapel Hill)
If Fletcher Magee's 36-point outing and game-winning 3 against Georgia Tech last December didn't put him on your radar, his 27 in an upset of fifth-ranked Carolina at the Smith Center certainly did. The now-senior from Orlando leads a talented roster that returns four starters and will look to unseat UNCG in the Southern Conference and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015.
Mike Young's Terriers finished fourth in a very even SoCon last year and fell to Wes Miller's UNCG squad by one in the conference semis. The 17th-year head coach should become the school's all-time wins leader this season, and his 2019 unit could challenge that 2015 squad for the best of his tenure.
Magee has rightly garnered most of the offseason attention as the preseason SoCon Player of the Year after his standout junior campaign. With 351 career made 3s entering Tuesday night's season opener, Magee has a realistic shot at challenging Travis Bader's NCAA record of 504 career 3s set in 2014 at Oakland. Bader is the only D-I player ever to reach the 500 mark, blitzing past J.J. Redick's previous high of 457.
But this is no one-man team, as the Tar Heels learned last December. Cameron Jackson is back as well, and the 6-8 senior figures to be among the best big men in the SoCon again in 2019. The Winchester, Virginia, product was outstanding in Chapel Hill last year, finishing with 18 points, nine boards and six blocks to help limit UNC to just 36 percent shooting on the night.
Guards Nathan Hoover and Trevor Stumpe give the Terriers four returners who averaged in double figures a year ago. As a team in 2018, Wofford ranked in the top 10 nationally in 3-point shooting and the top 25 in effective FG%, so this is a team that should have no trouble putting the ball in the basket.
With 10 letterwinners back, there may not be much room for freshmen to make an impact this season, but sophomore transfer Chevez Goodwin figures to see the floor plenty. The 6-9 forward saw limited action two years ago as a freshman at Charleston, but should help add some size to a Terrier lineup that often features four guards on the floor.
Tuesday night may be the most anticipated regular season game in Wofford history, as the 3,400-seat Richardson Indoor Stadium hosts UNC for the first time. And it certainly won't be one that the Tar Heels are looking past.
