Four Tar Heels Inducted Into Phi Beta Kappa
December 5, 2018 | Field Hockey, Women's Gymnastics, Cross Country, Academics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four student-athletes were among 124 University of North Carolina students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society on Tuesday. Jamie DeCicco, Morgan Goetz, Ashley Smith and Lauren Weisel were recognized for the academic excellence they've achieved, which has come while they were also balancing the time demands of competing at the highest levels in athletics.
DeCicco is a senior from Fayetteville, Ga., and a member of the Carolina gymnastics team. She specializes in beam and uneven bars and has earned EAGL All-Scholastic Team honors each year. A psychology major with minors in biology and chemistry, she will graduate in May and plans to attend medical school
Goetz is a senior from Cary, N.C., and a starting defender on the UNC field hockey team, which won NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference championships this fall. She is majoring in biomedical engineering and had to miss Tuesday's ceremony because of a class presentation – she and her classmates are designing a way to prevent reinfection after root canal surgery. An All-ACC Academic team honoree, Goetz will graduate in May and plans to go on to graduate school in BME.
Smith is a junior from Clemmons, N.C., and a member of the cross country team. She had a career-best finish of 107th at the 2018 NCAA Southeast Regional and placed 82nd at ACC Championships. She competed in all five fall competitions, improving her times in each appearance. Smith is majoring in computer science with minors in biology and Hispanic studies.
Weisel is from Carlsbad, Calif., and competed for four years as part of the gymnastics team, specializing in vault and floor and earning EAGL All-Scholastic Team honors each year. She graduated from UNC in May of 2018 after majoring in exercise and sport science with minors in biology and chemistry and is currently applying to medical school.
The induction ceremony, which was initially set for early November but was rescheduled after campus was closed because of a water crisis, was held at Hill Hall. Buck Goldstein, University Entrepreneur in Residence and Professor of the Practice in the Department of Economics, delivered the keynote address.
Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in the college and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements. A student who has completed 75 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a GPA of 3.85 or better (on a 4-point scale) is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has completed 105 hours of course work in the liberal arts and sciences with a 3.75 GPA. Grades earned at other universities are not considered. Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify.
Past and present Phi Beta Kappa members from across the country have included 17 American presidents and numerous artistic, intellectual and political leaders. Seven of the current U.S. Supreme Court Justices are members.
