JV Tar Heels Downs Pfeiffer, 125-77
February 15, 2018 | JV Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL— After a snow week, the Heels returned Tuesday night to take on the Pfeiffer Falcons. They came out strong in the first half, keeping a fast-paced controlled game utilizing the starting line-up and a few reserves to maintain momentum. The final score was 125-77. The Tar Heels Heels scored more points in the second half than the Falcons did in the entire game.
The Falcons played quite a different game though. With their 10-player roster, they played a two-lineup rotation, subbing 5 players at a time every time. Some success may be attributed to the atmosphere. There were over 100 spectators at the game, which is good attendance for a stand-alone game. Unfortunately, several of those fans were Pfeiffer's, which provided an interesting atmosphere for the game.
It forced a turn of momentum- the Heels turnovers nearly doubled in a matter of minutes coupled with missed layups. It was 42-36 when halftime rolled around and the team returned to the locker room knowing they could and should be playing better.
Coach Lucas commented on his way out that the team "lacked energy." Going in disappointed translated to an unexpected and record breaking second half. What the Tar Heels lacked in the first half, they made up for in the second. Defensively, UNC showed out. Will Breck had four blocks and eight rebounds, second only to Preston Smith who had nine rebounds. Every player scored at least two points for the Heels with six players scoring in double digits. We dominated the half in all aspects of the game, outscoring the falcons 83-41. Pearce Landry led the team with 16 point, shooting 5-11 from behind the arc. Robbie O'Han also scored big with 15 points and went 5-5 from the 3.
The only thing that seemed to be even in the game was foul trouble. For the Falcons, Tyrese Harvey fouled out early with 14 minutes left in the 2nd. From the Heels, Devin Dukes fouled out with 16 minutes left in the game.
