Carolina Falls to Wisconsin in Weekend Finale
February 18, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite a 9-7 win over the Badgers Saturday, North Carolina could not complete the sweep Sunday as Wisconsin earned the 6-0 decision to conclude the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Anderson Stadium.
Â
Wisconsin (4-4) took an early three-run lead in the second inning that North Carolina (5-4) could not come back from.
Â
Kiani Ramsey highlighted the Tar Heels in the field with a diving catch early in the second inning, totaling five putouts in center. Leah Murray extended her hitting streak to nine while Sierra Parkinson lengthened her reached-base streak to the same number with a single.
Â
Both teams traded his in the first inning but Wisconsin plated three runs in the second on a pair of RBI-walks and a Kelsey Jenkins single. Another fly-out to Ramsey in center ended the inning, but the damage was done.
Â
Murray singled in the third and Ramsey followed suit in the fourth before the Badgers added two more runs in the fifth inning on a hit-by-pitch and walk. Wisconsin's Brooke Wyderski upped the score to 6-0 with a solo shot to left in the sixth.
Â
Brittany Pickett and Berlynne Delamora each drew a walk in the sixth but the Tar Heels could not capitalize. Hailey Jenson roped a single to center in the bottom of the seventh to spark a comeback but that would be all for the Tar Heels.
Â
Hannah Nommensen made her season debut in the circle, going 1.2 innings with the start. Nommensen gave up a trio of runs against 12 batters. Pickett tossed 5.1 innings of relief, striking out three and giving up three runs.
Â
North Carolina beings its six-game road trip Tuesday at South Carolina before heading west to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Wednesday through Saturday in Palm Springs, California.
