Carolina Falls Short to Pitt, 6-3
March 17, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite a three-run home run by Taylor Wike, Pitt's early scoring secured the 6-3 decision for the Panthers Saturday at Anderson Stadium. Carolina and Pitt will play for the series win Sunday at 1 p.m.
Wike and Hailey Jensen shined for Carolina's offense each with two hits while Wike accounted for all three RBIs. Leah Murray and Megan Dray both recorded a hit in the contest. The Tar Heels fall to 12-14 overall and 4-1 in conference. Pittsburgh's Giorgiana Zeremenko went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game as the Panthers improved to 14-11-1, 3-2 in the ACC.
Pittsburgh scored six unanswered runs to begin Saturday's game before Carolina found the board. The Panthers mirrored yesterday's start, scoring in the first inning. Taylor Myers drew an RBI-walk for the first score. Zeremenko added three more on her second home run of the series. Gabrielle Fredericks put one more on the board on a solo shot to center in the second before a wild pitch plated the final run.
Carolina responded in the third inning thanks to Wike's home run. Megan Dray led off the third with a double to left field before an infield single by Murray put runners on the corners for Carolina. Wike cleared the bases with her fifth home run of the season, cutting Pitt's lead in half. However, that would be all for the Tar Heels' offense on Saturday.
Starting pitcher Kellyn Daly tossed the first inning and faced one batter in the second before Katie Grace Olinger came in. After five batters, Hannah Nommensen tossed the final out of the second. Nommensen tossed 1.2 innings before Brittany Pickett came in to close. Pickett entered the game in the fourth with the bases loaded and only one out, but escaped the frame and the game unscathed.
Pittsburgh's Kayla Harris went the distance for the win while Daly took the loss for Carolina.
The Tar Heels and Panthers wrap up the series at Anderson Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m.
