UNC Braves Chill For Day Of Racing in Philly
March 24, 2018 | Women's Rowing
The Tar Heel varsity eight won both its races Saturday to highlight a day of rowing competition on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. On a chilly, windy day, the Tar Heels took on Temple in the morning and Saint Joseph's in the afternoon, with Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College racing on the opposite schedule.
Â
"As a team, we had a really good day and we are appreciative to both Temple and Saint Joe's for hosting and allowing us to get two more races in today," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We have a very quick turnaround as we get ready for tomorrow."
Â
UNC races Sunday at the Cooper Sprints, hosted by Bucknell on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The field also includes Boston College, Drexel, Massachusetts, Navy, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Heats begin at 7:30 a.m.
Â
On Saturday, UNC beat Temple in three of five races in the morning and won all four against Saint Joseph's in the afternoon.
Â
The varsity eight won both, finishing in 6:29.46 to Temple's 6:34.6 and in 6:33.2 to SJU's 6:40.2
Â
The second varsity eight fell to Temple by less than two second but beat SJU in a time of 6:41.6
Â
"I was really proud of how both boats attacked the entire 2,000 meters today," Haney said. "The V8 had a wonderful day and raced their race well for both events. They took command of both races and were able to capitalize throughout. Against Temple, the 2V8 didn't race the way they normally do, but they came back into their own against Saint Joe's. I was proud of them for not allowing the first race to negatively carry over into the second race."
Â
The third varsity eight won both of its races, with a time of 7:01.9 against Temple and 7:07.5 vs. Saint Joseph's. "It was nice to see our boat execute the race plan we have established as a unit, but with great race aggression from start to finish," said UNC assistant coach Emilie Gross. "That's something we hadn't done yet this year."
Â
The varsity four fell to Temple in the morning then beat the Hawks in the afternoon with a time of 7:14.3. The second varsity four won its race against Temple with a time of 7:31.2 then raced with the varsity fours in the afternoon because SJU didn't field a 2V8. The Tar Heels' second boat placed third in that race, but was just three seconds behind the Hawks' varsity four.
Â
"The A four had a pretty rough first piece but made the necessary changes to take care of business for the second race," UNC assistant head coach Anthony Brock said. "The B four had a great start for the first race and just controlled the race the whole way down the course. In their second piece they really had nothing to lose as they were racing two A boats so they just attacked the piece and were fighting with the Saint Joe's A down the course.
Â
"Today was a great opportunity to see two strong crews to get ready for tomorrow."
