I remember as a kid going to speech class 3 days a week to help me combat a SEVERE stutter. I wouldn't talk in class with the other students, due to the fear of being laughed at. My speech teacher was so kind, instructing me to take deep breaths before I tried to articulate my thoughts. She would take me and another student (Scott), to McDonald's on Friday's and have us order food to practice in public/overcome our fears. I went to UNC to major in Communications with the idea that one day I would be a college basketball analyst. I told Dick Vitale that at the McDonald's AA game. I told the Late- GREAT Stuart Scott that later at our Midnight Madness in Chapel Hill. When my back went out for the final time while playing in Italy, I called Coach Guthridge asking for help on my next move. Months later I'm sitting with the voice of the Hornets, Steve Martin auditioning for Raycom Sports in a room surrounded by seemingly every ACC game ever played on DVD/VHS. My Dad and Bro surprised me by buying me suits. DA sent me a couple from Elevee'. My first game was Maryland @ Virginia Tech. Still have the credential. Brooklyn, then a baby; and I would go in the woods behind the crib, media guides in tow, me studying my ass off prepping while he ran around playing. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but KNEW I wanted to be good at it. In a few hours I head to Brooklyn NY again for the ACC Tournament, set to be on your TV screen for ALL 14 games. I am GRATEFUL-THANKFUL for EVERYONE who cared enough to help a young chubby kid find confidence in his OWN Voice, and in Himself.
