JV Tar Heels Down Hampden-Sydney
March 8, 2018 | JV Men's Basketball
Franklin Street was transforming into full-out, Tar Heel Territory. Students worked restlessly in the library all afternoon, trying to complete the assignments they'd normally put off for another night. Fans from all over were laying out their lucky game-day attire and preparing their face and body paint. The entire campus was buzzing with anticipation for the following night. Everyone was prepping for the biggest regular-season matchup in college basketball.
Everyone, that is, except for Hubert Davis and his team.
Of course, they'd been thinking of the Carolina vs. Duke game just like the rest of us, but there was still a game to be played in the Smith Center before all of their attention could turn to the Tobacco Road Rivalry.
Even in warm-ups, there was an evident change in energy. Maybe it was the contagious excitement of the week, but whatever it was, the UNC JV team looked unstoppable in their game against Hampden-Sydney College. A dunk by Will Breck sparked a 10-0 run that gave the Heels a 15-point lead early in the first half.
The score was 41-27 entering the second half, and Hampden Sydney was never able to recover. The Heels continued to dominate with big plays, including a steal by junior guard, Andrew Gillespie, who lobbed the ball up the court to an open Robbie O'Han for a layup, putting the Heels up 53-31.
O'Han and fellow junior, Caleb Ellis, led the team in points (Ellis with 19; O'Han with 14) and kept a consistent intensity throughout the game which ended in an 87-59 victory. It was the perfect foreword to Varsity's victory over Duke that would follow on Thursday.
