ACC Regular Season Title On The Line Friday At Duke
April 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - The No. 1 North Carolina women's tennis team enters the weekend in search of its sixth-consecutive regular season ACC title. The Tar Heels have two matches remaining in the regular season, visiting No. 4 Duke on Friday and playing host to Pitt on Senior Day Sunday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.Â
Carolina and Duke enter Friday's match tied for first place in the ACC standings with identical 11-1 records. The winner will have the upper hand in garnering the ACC regular season crown and the top seed in the league's championship event that will take place April 25-29 at Cary Tennis Center.Â
First serve at Ambler Tennis Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
UNC has won five-straight matches against Duke spanning the last four seasons. The most recent head-to-head contests featured a 4-1 victory back in February in the semifinals of the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championship and a 4-0 win last May in the NCAA Championship Round of 16 in Athens, Georgia.
The Tar Heels, who are 22-2 overall and have won their last six matches, find themselves atop the national rankings for the 10th week in a row. Duke has lived in the top-5 as well this spring and owns a 19-2 record.
Carolina's doubles tandem of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham regained its No. 1 ranking this week, while Alle Sanford and Sara Daavettila check in 23rd this week. In singles, sophomore Makenna Jones moved up to No. 11 this week after a pair of victories over nationally-ranked opponents last weekend. Sanford checks in No. 24, Daavettila is No. 40, Aney No. 82, Alexa Graham No. 83 and and junior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer re-entered the rankings at No. 117.Â
Carolina is again the only team in the nation this week to boast six singles players among the top 125.Â
For Duke, Samantha Harris moved up a spot in the singles poll, moving back to a career-best No. 4. Kelly Chen checks in at No. 29 and Meible Chi is No. 81. Rounding out the singles poll is Kaitlyn McCarthy at No. 119 and Ellyse Hamlin at No. 124. Duke still has a pair of doubles duos in the top-10 as Harris and Chen are No. 6 and McCarthy and Hamlin are No. 9.
UNC will honor three seniors - Marika Akkerman, Maggie Kane and Cassandra Vazquez - on Sunday against Pitt at 1 p.m.
