Smith, Proehl Picked On Day Three Of NFL Draft
April 28, 2018 | Football
North Carolina linebacker Andre Smith and wide receiver Austin Proehl were selected on day three of the 2018 NFL Draft Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Smith was a seventh-round choice of the Carolina Panthers while Proehl went later in the round to the Buffalo Bills. With Smith and Proehl joining M.J. Stewart, Carolina has 19 draft picks in Larry Fedora's six seasons at UNC and four years with three or more selections in the Fedora era.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Smith made 14 career starts at middle linebacker before suffering a season-ending injury against Louisville last September. Smith ranked seventh in the ACC with 8.7 tackles per game as a sophomore in 2016, finishing the year with 113 stops. He had 21 tackles in two games as a junior and had a 73-yard interception return against Cal in the 2017 season opener.
Proehl played in six games as a senior and caught 21 passes for 337 yards and a touchdown. The Charlotte product suffered what was thought to be a season-ending injury against Duke but returned for Senior Day and caught three balls for 52 yards in the win over Western Carolina. He passed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for his career early in 2017.
