Tar Heels Claim Class Of 2006 Cup In Stellar Day Of Racing
April 28, 2018 | Women's Rowing
RALEIGH, N.C. – The UNC rowing team won four of five races, celebrated its seniors and welcomed back alumnae during a sunny morning of competition Saturday at Lake Wheeler. "It was a fantastic day for Carolina rowing," UNC head coach Sarah Haney said. "We are ecstatic with how we performed as a team across the board and are so excited that we were able to race as many boats as we were able to today."
The Tar Heels raced a total of 10 boats over the five races. The varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four all were two-boat races, with Carolina and Georgetown going head-to-head and UNC winning comfortably.
The varsity eight finished in 6:40.40 and won by more than eight seconds. By virtue of winning that race, the Tar Heels regained the Class of 2006 Cup. It goes each year to the winner of the V8+ race between UNC and Georgetown, and the Hoyas won it last year.
The Carolina second varsity eight crossed in 6:46.89, ahead of GU's time of 7:13.95.
In the varsity four, UNC finished in 7:32.19 ahead of GU's 7:53.79.
The Tar Heels raced multiple boats in the other two races. In the third varsity eight, UNC took first place in 6:55.17. Duke, which competed only in the 3V8+, was more than six seconds back, in 7:01.34. Carolina's B and C boats took third and fourth, with times of 7:22.50 and 7:37.61, respectively.
The only race without a Tar Heel boat crossing first was the second varsity four, which Georgetown took in 7:46.28. UNC raced four boats, which finished in 7:54.71 (UNC A), 7:56.33 (UNC C), 8:00.86 (UNC D) and 8:15.56 (UNC B).
After racing was completed, the team's 12 seniors were honored by presentations from the junior class then celebrated with a cookout.
The program also marked its 20-year anniversary and welcomed back members of past teams. Haney was a member of the first UNC varsity team, in 1997-98, and she was joined on Saturday by several other alums from that squad who came back to cheer on the Tar Heels.
"It was really fun to see faces from days of old and see how much the program has grown and changed over the years," Haney said.
Saturday's action was UNC's only local race of the spring. It had been three weeks since the Tar Heels raced on April 6-7 in Sarasota, Fla., and now will be two more weeks until the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship May 13 in Clemson, S.C.
"It was great to see each boat perform and execute their race plan as we been working on since we left Florida," Haney said. "Now we'll focus on final exams then head off to ACCs. I feel really good about what each boat is doing and our progress towards our conference championship."
