Ladowski Sparks Tar Heels To Beat Miami In 12 Innings, 8-4
April 7, 2018 | Baseball
Josh Ladowski was the spark plug off the bench the Tar Heels needed as he went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored, all in extra innings. A triple in the 11th inning set himself up for the go-ahead run while a double in the 12th inning brought home two Tar Heel runners to secure the win.
Just as they have in 11 of their last 12 games, North Carolina struck first in game one against the Hurricanes as they tacked on two runs in the second inning to take the 2-0 lead. After Zack Gahagan was robbed in centerfield with a tremendous catch and collision at the fence, Ashton McGee used the defensive shift to his advantage and bunted down the third base line for a single. With back-to-back walks to Ike Freeman and Kip Brandenburg, Dallas Tessar singled to centerfield to score two Tar Heel runners for the early lead.
Miami came back in the third inning with two runs of their own to tie the game. A single from Hunter Tackett followed by a ground roll double from Raymond Gil put runners on second and third for the Hurricanes. A wild pitch from Tyler Baum brought one run in while a ground out to shortstop scored the other to knot the game at two.
After two scoreless innings from both sides, Miami took their first lead of the game in the sixth after scoring one run for the 3-2 advantage. Romy Gonzalez walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before a blooper over third base from Hunter Tackett brought home the go-ahead run.
It didn't take long for the Heels to tie the game coming back with a run of its own in the top of the seventh. Brandon Martorano got things going as he drew a walk after pinch hitting for Kip Brandenburg. Martorano was then replaced on the base paths by Dylan Enwiller who stole second to put a runner in scoring position for another pinch hitter, freshman Clemente Inclan. Inclan then laced a ball right up the middle to score Enwiller from second to tie the game, 3-3.
Carolina looked like it was going to take a late lead in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out, but the Hurricanes clamped down and got the next two Tar Heels batters out without conceding a run.
In a strange turn of events in the bottom of the eighth, with one out and two strikes on a Hurricanes batter, the lights completely shut off at Alex Rodriguez Park while Brett Daniels was pitching. After a 20-minute delay things got back underway as Brett Daniels went on to get the next two outs to bring us to the ninth inning tied, 3-3.
With one out in the top of the 11th inning, Josh Ladowski laced a triple to the right field corner to put the winning run 90 feet away. With one ball and one strike, Cody Roberts dropped a bunt down the first base line as Ladowski was already heading home for a perfect suicide squeeze to give the Tar Heels the 4-3 lead.
But, Miami would score one of their own to send the game to the 12th inning. Michael Burns started the 11th inning off for Miami with a shot to third base that Kyle Datres couldn't handle as he reached first on the error. A sacrifice bunt by Hunter Tackett put Burns on second base and a double from Gabe Ribera brought home Burns for the tying run. The ball was lined to Ashton McGee in left field, who had Burns beat by two steps on the throw, but Cody Roberts couldn't hold on to the throw to make the out at the plate.
On the first pitch of the 12th inning, Kyle Datres lined a leadoff double down the third base line to put a Tar Heel runner in scoring position with no outs and was followed by a Brandon Riley single to put runners on the corners. Next up, Gahagan smoked the first ball he saw to centerfield to bring home Datres for the 5-4 lead and put runners on first and second with no outs. Ike Freeman fought off several pitches before he hit a shallow pop up to right field that was misplayed by the outfielder to load the bases. Ben Casparius added to the Heels lead with a single through the left side of the infield for the 6-4 advantage. Ladowski came up big yet again with a double to right field to bring home two more Tar Heels as they finished the 12th inning with a 8-4 lead.
The Tar Heels and Hurricanes will face off in game two tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla.
