CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Though sad to see the 2018 season come to a close, the North Carolina gymnastics team had plenty to celebrate at its annual awards night on Saturday, April 28th. Twelve individuals were awarded a total of fourteen awards, each for various athletic and personal accomplishments.
All four gymnasts in Carolina's 2018 senior class were recognized with team awards. Senior Morgan Lane racked up three separate individual awards including the coaches' award for outstanding performances on balance beam, the Most Outstanding Gymnast Award, and the Kaplan Award for her outstanding achievement in the NCAA post-season competition. Advancing to the championship stage for the first time in her career, Lane finished 15th at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships in St. Louis, Missouri with an all-around score of 39.2750. Her final score also propelled her to the top of the Carolina record books for the most points set in a single season.
Senior Madison Nettles earned two awards of her own: the coaches' award for outstanding performances on vault and the Gilbert Leadership Award for her outstanding commitment to pursuing both team and individual goals. Lauren Weisel was the recipient of the 2018 Kaiser Leadership Award for her commitment to the team and her individual development, and Kaitlynn Hedelund was a co-recipient for the coaches' award for outstanding performances on the uneven bars.
One junior and five sophomore gymnasts were also honored at the awards ceremony. Junior Madison Hargrave received the 2018 Companioni Award which acknowledges a tenacious spirit and an uncompromising will to succeed, and sophomore Jamie Antinori was given the Gym Heel Spirit Award for her own outstanding athletic efforts as well as the exceptional encouragement and support she provided for her teammates in both training and competition. Sophomore Khazia Hislop took home two accolades at the end of the evening: the coaches' award for outstanding performances on floor exercise and the 2018 Tonietto Award which recognizes exceptional aesthetic quality in gymnastics performances. Sophomores Mikayla Robinson and Alexis Allen were co-recipients of the Most Improved Gymnast Award and sophomore Mekyllah Williams earned the 2018 coaches' award for outstanding performances on uneven bars alongside Kaitlynn Hedelund.
The Tar Heels also commended both student assistant coach Mackenzie Austin and student manager Kate Foster for their dedication to the Carolina gymnastics program. Austin earned the 2018 Van Slyke Award for her outstanding contributions to the team while Foster was recognized for her outstanding service throughout the season.
The 2018 gymnastics season was full of exciting accomplishments: a fifth all-time team score of 196.600 in the season closer, a sixth-place regular-season national ranking on floor exercise, and three rotation scores of at least 49.000 in the same meet for the first time since 2009. Under the guidance of head coach Derek Galvin and assistant coaches Taylor Spears and Marie Case Denick, Carolina gymnastics hopes to build upon the team's success in 2018 and to come back even stronger for the next competition season.
