May 11, 2018 | Softball
ATLANTA – Returning to Mewborn field after this morning's victory over Georgia Tech at 12:15 a.m., #3 North Carolina dropped the ACC Tournament semifinal contest to #2 Pitt, 3-0 on Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
Despite Leah Murray's leadoff single to begin the game, the Tar Heels were unable to score. Carolina threatened with runners in scoring position in the first few innings but Pitt's defense stood strong. Also logging a hit, Brittany Pickett went the distance in the circle with four strikeouts for her 32nd complete game of the season with a 28-12 record.
Taylor Wike demonstrated her ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor on a diving grab in the first, logging five outs throughout the game. Murray stole her 34th base of the season, upping Carolina's total to 116.
Pitt strung together a pair of singles to set up for Taylor Myer's two-run single, but a sac-bunt and fly-out ended the threat in the second.
Pickett laced the ball through the left side for a single, but a double play ended the fourth inning. An RBI-double off the bat of Erin Hershman gave Pitt a three run lead in the bottom of the frame.
The Tar Heels battled to the end, but could not score a run. Pickett took the loss while Pitt's Sarah Dawson took the win. The Tar Heels fall to 30-26 while the Panthers improve to 33-17-1.
