McArthur & Keefer Earn All-ACC Honors; Six Tar Heels Advance To Event Finals
May 11, 2018 | Track & Field
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - University of North Carolina sophomore Daniel McArthur and freshman Anna Keefer both earned second-team All-ACC honors on the second day of the 2018 ACC Track & Field Championships at Cobb Stadium on the campus of the University of Miami.
McArthur took sixth in the men's shot put with his throw of 56-9 ¼ (17.30 meters) to earn All-ACC honors for the second-consecutive time at the outdoor championships. He has now earned All-ACC honors in each of the three championships he has competed in, including the 2017 ACC Indoor Championships.
Keefer, the 2018 ACC indoor champion in the women's long jump, took sixth in the event this afternoon with a jump of 19-10 ¼ (6.05 meters) to claim All-ACC honors for the second time as a freshman.
"For Daniel and Anna to advance to the finals and score points for the teams really helps a lot," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "They are still young, and being able to consistently perform well at the championship level is going to pay dividends in the long run."
Also in the event, sophomore Brianna Duncan took seventh with a collegiate-best jump of 19-9 (6.02 meters), and senior Alexis Gannon finished eighth with her jump of 19-6 ¾ (5.96 meters). The trio captured six points for the Tar Heels in the event.
"We had three kids in the final, which is a fantastic accomplishment," Meaders said. "All competed really hard in windy conditions, but I was really happy with the results. That was a great event for us."
Duncan and Keefer also advanced to Saturday's 100-meter final (6:20 p.m.) with their performances in the prelims. Duncan ran the field's fastest time, clocking 11.32, and Keefer claimed the eighth spot in the final with her her time of 11.62.
