Selmon, Men's 4x400 Capture ACC Titles
May 13, 2018 | Track & Field
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - University of North Carolina senior Kenny Selmon defended his ACC crown in the 400-meter hurdles, and the men's 4x400 captured the relay title on the final day of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Cobb Stadium on the campus of the University of Miami Saturday.Â
The men's team finished in seventh at the ACC Championships with 51.5 points, and the women finished eighth with 50.5 points.
Selmon remained undefeated in the 400-meter hurdles on the season as he became the second Tar Heel in the last five years to win back-to-back titles in the event. Selmon ran 49.33 in the race this year, a time that easily won the event.Â
A Tar Heel has now won the ACC men's 400-meter hurdles title in six out of the last eight seasons.Â
Selmon also anchored Carolina to an ACC title in the men's 4x400. The squad of sophomore Brandon Cachon, freshman Isaiah Palmer, redshirt-senior Cory Nicholls and Selmon ran a season-best 3:07.66 to give Carolina its fifth title in six seasons in the event.
In addition to Palmer contributing on the mile relay, the freshman also took home first-team All-ACC honors in the men's 400 meters by taking third with a lifetime-best time of 46.55.
On the women's side, the 4x400 relay of senior Jewel Christian, senior Cierra Dunston, senior Natisha Dixon and sophomore McKinley McNeill ran a season-best 3:34.97, the fourth-fastest time in UNC history, to take third and earn second-team All-ACC honors.
Dunston also finished fourth in the women's 400 meters with a lifetime-best 52.40, the third-best time in UNC history, to earn second-team All-ACC honors. She now owns top three times in the indoor and outdoor 400 at UNC.
Redshirt-sophomore Jared Martin started off the day for Carolina, taking second in the men's javelin with a lifetime-best throw of 220-10 (67.31 meters). After coming to Carolina as a swimmer in 2015 and first picking up the javelin just two years ago, Martin reached the podium and earned first-team All-ACC honors in the event for the first time in his career. He also surpassed his pervious personal best on each of his final four throws, ultimately besting it by almost three meters.
