Carolina Athletics salutes and congratulates all of those earning University of North Carolina degrees Sunday and over the weekend. Among the nearly 4,000 undergraduates receiving degrees were more than 100 members of UNC's 28 varsity teams.
UNC's student-athlete graduates will embark on a variety of paths, some furthering their education through medical school and other graduate programs while others will launch careers in a wide range of fields. Still others will travel, some will teach or coach, and some will focus on their sports to compete professionally or chase Olympic dreams. All will rely on the degree bestowed on Sunday.
"Of all our students' accomplishments, earning a degree from UNC is the one of which we're most proud," UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. "They've balanced so many things while working toward graduation, so toon commencement day we celebrate their accomplishments and wish them continued success as they move on to the next phases of their lives. We hope the lessons they've learned here, in the classroom and in competition, will serve them well.
"We had a number of seniors who were competing on Sunday, missing commencement while they represented Carolina. To those students in particular, we say an extra thank you for your dedication. It's not an easy road, and we're all appreciative of the sacrifices made.
"To all our student-athletes, thank you for representing UNC so well. All of us in Carolina Athletics applaud you. You make us proud to be Tar Heels."
