Tar Heel 2V8 And 3V8 Lead The Way At ACC Championship
May 13, 2018 | Women's Rowing
North Carolina's second and third varsity eights both reached the grand final and placed sixth overall to lead the Tar Heels Sunday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship, held at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Â
UNC placed seventh overall. Kathryn Johnson, a senior from Thomasville, N.C., represented UNC on the All-ACC team, earning second-team honors.
Â
"This was a great weekend to cap off a fantastic season," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We are so proud of this team and all that they accomplished this season. Our goal was for them to all have their best race of the year today and we feel like we accomplished that. It has been an amazing season watching this team continue to grow, get faster, and gain confidence at a new level each week."
Â
Carolina's 2V8 finished sixth overall in 6:41.12, less than a second behind fifth-place Louisville. To reach the grand final, the Tar Heels grabbed second place in their morning heat, three seconds ahead of Duke and behind only Virginia.
Â
The third varsity eight also raced in the evening's grand final after placing third in the heats, behind Virginia and Duke. In the final, the Tar Heels finished in 6:57.34.
Â
UNC's other three boats advanced to the petite finals, with the varsity eight placing second in that race for eighth overall. The varsity four also was eighth overall, and the second varsity four was ninth.
Â
Virginia captured its ninth consecutive ACC Championship and its 18th title in the event's 19 years. Cavalier boats won all five events.
Â
The championship was held in very hot conditions, with temperatures reaching as high as 90 degrees with a very slight crosswind of 1.5 to 3 mph.
Â
It was UNC's final race of the season and capped the careers of 12 Tar Heel seniors: Caitlin Beakes, Mandi Biondi, Morgan Donnelly, Emma Gilbert, Caeli Harr, Kate Hickert, Samantha Hoelzer, Kathryn Johnson, Jackie Kenny, Madelyn Krebs, Ellen Minaudo and Maddie Omeltchenko.
Â
"We are proud of our 12 seniors who have led this team and demonstrated what it means to reach for goals that sometimes seem impossible," Haney said. "They have continued to believe in our ability and have pushed this team to always strive for more."
