Tar Heels Sweep Hokies, Clinch No. 1 Overall Seed In ACC Tournament
May 19, 2018 | Baseball
Chapel Hill – No. 6 North Carolina completed the sweep over Virginia Tech on Saturday with a 6-1 victory, and in the process clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the ACC Tournament next week at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Gianluca Dalatri made his first appearance for the Tar Heels since February 23 and threw four scoreless innings striking out two Hokies.
North Carolina tacked on three runs through the first three innings to take the early 3-0 lead in their final home game of the 2018 regular season. In the second inning, a sacrifice fly from Jackson Hesterlee brought Ashton McGee home to open the scoring before the Tar Heels tacked on two more in the third after loading the bases.
The Hokies clawed a run back in the fifth inning to make the score 3-1, but the Tar Heels scored three in the bottom half of the frame for the 6-1 advantage. Michael Busch led things off with a double to the fence and was followed up by a Kyle Datres single to left to put runners on the corners with one out. A Brandon Riley double to left field scored Busch from third to make it 4-1 with two runners in scoring position. Ashton McGee wasted no time bringing home both Tar Heels with a single to left center to give the Heels the 6-1 lead.
With the win, the Tar Heels capture the No. 1 overall seed in the ACC Tournament which begins next week. Since the ACC split in to two divisions, the only other time the Tar Heels have been the No. 1 overall seed was in 2013, when they won the conference tournament.
Gianluca Dalatri made his first appearance on the mound for the Tar Heels in 12 weeks and had a stellar outing throwing four shutout innings, only conceding two hits while striking out two Hokies as he threw 35 of 47 (74.4%) of his pitches for strikes.
Josh Hiatt picked up his third win of the season after throwing 3.2 innings in relief only giving up one hit while striking out one batter.
The Tar Heels will be back in action next week at the ACC Tournament as dates and times will be announced on Sunday.
