At the George Watts Hill Alumni Center, the fifth-annual event included messages from Chancellor Carol Folt, who celebrated the students' determination and grit, and Provost Bob Blouin, who thanked them for the way they represent UNC athletically and academically.
Â
The highlight of each year's event is the recognition of the Top 10 Scholar-Athletes, the five men and five women with the highest grade point averages among those graduating in 2018.
Â

Each student gave a short speech, introducing his or her invited faculty guest and telling of that person's impact. All also gave thanks to the additional professors, coaches, support staff members, teammates and families who have supported them. They offered a wealth of advice for other student-athletes, especially those with a few years still to spend in Chapel Hill. Among the tips were to take advantage of the resources offered and leverage the support available; be positive and find joy in the challenge; do what you love and don't let anyone stop you; realize how quickly your career will go by and get involved early; and always remember that as student-athletes they're representing something bigger than themselves.
Â
UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham applauded the student-athletes, noting that the total of 385 Tar Heels on the 2016-17 ACC Academic Honor Roll was a record for the second year in a row, and also recognized those supporting them: Folt and Blouin, the faculty members in attendance, and the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes, which organized the luncheon.
