Sigouin Named ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year
May 21, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The ITA announced its regional awards on Monday, and North Carolina's Benjamin Sigouin has been named the Men's Rookie of the Year for the Carolina Region. Sigouin, from Vancouver, Canada, was also the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year.
Â
It marks the second year in a row that a UNC player has won the award. Current sophomore William Blumberg, the 2018 ACC Player of the Year, won the ITA Rookie Award in 2017 and went on to be named National Rookie of the Year.
Â
It's the first time UNC players have won in back-to-back years. Other Tar Heels to be named ITA Region Rookie of the Year are Bryan Jones (1989), David Caldwell (1993), Stefan Hardy (2007) and Brayden Schnur (2014).
Â
Sigouin, who enrolled at UNC in January and immediately made an impact, is 16-4 this season, playing mostly at No. 2 singles. Currently ranked No. 32 nationally, he earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament singles draw and will begin play on Wednesday. Additionally, he was 18-4 in doubles this season, playing mostly at No. 2 with junior Blaine Boyden.

National ITA honors will be announced on Wednesday. For a full list of regional winners, click here.
