No. 3 Tar Heels Win Ninth Straight, Take Down Richmond 6-2
May 8, 2018 | Baseball
Chapel Hill –  No. 3 North Carolina won their ninth game in a row after defeating the Richmond Spiders 6-2 on Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Caden O'Brien picked up his fifth win of the season after coming on in relief of starter Rodney Hutchison, while Brandon Martorano went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Â
Â
After a week off, Carolina wasted little time getting back on the board as they scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Ashton McGee's infield single scored Tessar from third but that's the only runner the Tar Heels would plate.
Â
Richmond responded with two unanswered runs of their own to take the 2-1 lead heading in to the bottom of the fifth. After tying the game in the third, back-to-back two out doubles in the fifth inning put the Spiders on top, 2-1.
Â
The Heels responded with two runs of its own in the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. After stranding seven runners through the first five innings, Kyle Datres delivered with the bases loaded to bring home Brandon Martorano and Zack Gahagan for the lead. Datres hit a chopper to third base, but the throw to second base went in to right field to plate two Tar Heels.
Â
Carolina added to their lead in the seventh inning with two more runs to take the 5-2 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Dallas Tessar hit a ball to third base, but it went right between the legs of the Richmond third baseman to bring home two more Tar Heels.
Â
The Tar Heels will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Conway, S.C. to face off against No. 19 Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. ET.
